A new mural, “The Taking of a Village,” has been unveiled in the “distinguished City of Marina” by Catalyst Cannabis Marina. The mural, created by Seaside’s Hanif Panni, is a tribute to Low-Sabado, a fifth-generation Chinese-American who lived and worked in the Monterey area. The mural, called “The Taking of a Village,” is a tribute to Low-Sabado’s life and efforts to promote diversity, inclusion, and social justice. The mural was inspired by the owners of Catalyst Cannabis Marina, who were impressed by Panni’s work.
Low-Sabado, who died in 2021, was an activist who petitioned the city of Pacific Grove to pay more respect to the Chinese village that thrived for 53 years at Point Alones. She also asked the Feast of Lanterns Board of Directors to make changes to the faux-Chinese pageant, which eventually ended in 2022. After her death, her allies pushed the city to stop hosting the event, which ended in 2022.
Low-Sabado’s impact extended to the P.G. City Council, which issued a formal apology for the burning of the Chinese fishing village and other injustices against Chinese Americans. In 2023, the Monterey Bay Aquarium named their new penguin after Low-Sabado, a dedicated educator, community preservationist, and friend of the aquarium.
Panni hopes that the mural will leave a lasting legacy for both Low-Sabado and the Chinese American community, as well as a gift for Monterey County’s women.
