Approximately 50 students participated in a pro-Palestinian demonstration at CSU Monterey Bay on Monday, May 6. The demonstration took place in the main quad and lasted for 45 minutes, concluding at 6:30pm.
Prior to the demonstration, the organizers discussed the importance of being prepared for potential encampment scenarios. Edwin Lopez, a fourth-year student majoring in Global Studies and an organizer representing the Abolitionist & Decolonial Learning Collective, expressed the need for an investigation into the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, which is based at CSUMB. According to Leon Panetta, who founded the organization with his wife Sylvia in 1997, Panetta Institute is not affiliated with the Department of Defense.
Tyler Gidney, a lecturer at CSUMB and an alumnus of the university, along with a few other professors, observed the May 6 protest from a distance. Earlier this year, Gidney organized two screenings of pro-Palestinian documentaries. Michael Frederiksen, a member of the Monterey Palestinian Solidarity group, also observed the protest and noted that it was smaller compared to protests on other campuses due to the university’s smaller student population.
