Sol Treasures and the Robert Stanton Theatre recently showcased their first-ever Broadway production suitable for all ages. They made the bold choice of presenting “Fiddler on the Roof,” a renowned Broadway show that originally premiered in 1964 and later became a successful film in 1971.
The Robert Stanton Theatre, also known as the King City High School Auditorium, is typically known for hosting children’s performances such as “Frozen” or “Beauty and the Beast.” However, this time they aimed for something grander. Sol Treasures ambitiously brought “Fiddler on the Roof” to the stage, featuring four captivating performances in King City. The musical, with music by Jerry Bock, book by Joseph Stein, and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, concluded on May 11. We eagerly anticipate future ambitious projects that will further showcase the remarkable talent and dedication of our local arts and culture community.
Directed by Reg Huston, the production boasted an impressive and sizable cast who clearly enjoyed their roles. The focal point of the show was Tevye, the dairyman and father of five daughters, portrayed brilliantly by Jeff Hinderscheid. Hinderscheid’s portrayal captured Tevye’s gregarious and charming nature, as well as his ability to switch between cordiality and explosive anger. Despite his struggles, Tevye ultimately proved to be a loving and caring father, torn between upholding the traditions of Jewish communities in 1900s Russia, where the story is set, and his love for his daughters. Initially resistant to the idea of his daughters arranging their own marriages, Tevye’s defiance of tradition shocks the entire village.
In addition to its ambitious content, “Fiddler on the Roof” also impressed with its duration. The musical lasted three hours, including an intermission, providing a memorable night of artistic communion for the town’s residents. The auditorium truly delivered, offering a visually stunning and sonically captivating experience. Both on and off stage, the atmosphere was nothing short of fantastic.
