A once-unassuming building on Fremont Boulevard has been transformed into a striking work of public art, thanks to the efforts of Open Ground Studios, a local artist cooperative. The new 40-by-16-foot mural, titled “Unity in Diversity,” bursts forth in vibrant hues, featuring two heroic figures: a painter in profile and a face with shifting chameleon eyes, meant to embody the community’s spirit.
The project, led by Open Ground Studios’ founder Denese Sanders, emerged from a matching grant offered by the city to enhance the aesthetics of local buildings. Sanders partnered with artists Paul Richmond and Brenda Scettrini-Saglio to complete the piece in just eight days. The mural aims to celebrate Seaside’s rich history and evolving identity as a creative hub, from its diverse past as a military training base to its current role as an emerging cultural center.
Richmond, known for his dynamic use of color, opted for a more subdued and layered approach, allowing space for viewers to engage. The mural includes contributions from local artists like Bernadette Renois and incorporates abstract elements to reflect the diversity of artistic styles in the community.
“This mural captures the passion, imagination, and artistic diversity of Seaside,” Sanders remarked, calling the piece a dream realized. For Richmond, the mural represents public art’s power to unite. “That’s what art does. It unites us, even in our diversity,” he said.
The mural, a testament to Seaside’s growth and creative potential, stands as a visual invitation for residents and visitors alike to see the city anew.
